This study will examine the health outcomes over a one-year period of improved ventilation and air shaft sealing in multifamily buildings. The study will include approximately 120 households out of the 320 dwelling units in a public housing complex in New York City. All units received new specialized, bathroom vents. Half of the ventilation shafts were cleaned, sealed and had new roof fans installed. The other ventilation shafts were cleaned and their roof fans were made operable. The study hypothesis is that the interventions will produce statistically significant improvements in self-reported health status from before intervention to one-year after intervention for all residents and the improvements will be greater for residents of dwellings where vent shafts were sealed. Preliminary results will be available in 2016.
