As our climate changes, the frequency, durations, and severity of extreme weather events will continue to increase. Extreme weather events include heat waves, cold and winter weather, hurricanes and typhoons, and wildfires. Climate change can also result in a heightened allergy and pollen season and increased range of insects that serve as vectors for disease.

Climate change relates to housing in two ways. Housing plays a part in climate mitigation, as making homes more energy efficient reduces energy usage and needs. Housing resiliency is a critical part of climate adaptation. During certain extreme weather events or other climate impacts, homes can serve as refuge to protect residents from outdoor conditions. Climate-related events can also cause damages to homes that exacerbate housing quality and safety issues or destroy homes entirely.

The studies, datasets, and surveys below provide information on climate-related events, including extreme heat and cold, flooding, precipitation, wildfires, and drought, and their documented or potential impact on housing. Some of these tools demonstrate the historic and current impact of climate change through specific statistics and data. Other tools forecast the impact of future climate-related events and identify communities and areas that are particularly vulnerable. This information can inform decision-makers and the public on how climate events impact the housing, communities, and people that are most vulnerable and how communities can implement home modifications and other strategies to prepare and respond to climate change.

In this tool, you’ll find links to copies and archives of original resources that were previously hosted on federal websites but are no longer available. These materials have been preserved to ensure continued access for research, informed decision-making, and education.

In addition to the resources on this page, the National Center for Healthy Housing has specific resource libraries for Emergency Preparedness and Response issues, including extreme cold, extreme heat, floods, hurricanes, and wildfires.
