City of Grand Rapids Code Compliance Department

1120 Monroe Avenue NW , Suite 300 Grand Rapids, MI 49503

Beginning June 1, 2018, NCHH received a year-long $75,000 grant from the state of Michigan to provide technical assistance to four communities in the state about lead poisoning prevention and local housing codes. This project is called the Technical Assistance for Code Transformation and Innovation Collaborative (the TACTIC Project).
For each locality, NCHH will:
• Communicate with local codes and health officials and city leadership about the specifics of each jurisdiction’s enacted codes and procedures;
• Collect and analyze up-to-date building codes, inspection checklists, and other documents, comparing them to the Safe and Healthy Housing Standard and existing model codes;
• Interview key figures in each location, including city staff, inspectors, landlords, and community groups;
• Prepare a report identifying the strengths and areas for improvement with regards to lead paint and lead poisoning prevention for each city, with input from city officials.
We are currently in the process of collecting and analyzing codes from Flint, Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Battle Creek. For this process, NCHH staff have been in communication with the city of Grand Rapids’ Code Compliance Manager, interim City Manager, Development Center Manager, and Community Development Manager.
